Some males feel that they need to beat on their women, in order to feel like a man.
Saint Albans is primarily known for the many musical artist and athletes who have lived in the area. James Brown, Miles Davis, A Tribe Called Quest, Lena Horne, Milt Hilton, LL Cool J, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Bob Cousy, Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth have all lived in Saint Albans. This is also the place where I grew up. “Saint Albans” is a series of portraits of the people I grew up with, people I’ve never met and people who work in the area. Also, Including landscapes of my hometown. This series is a way of helping me kill the habit of not asking to photograph people I don’t know well or at all, reunite with old friends, learn more things I didn’t know about Saint Albans and to show people where I’m from.
One new thing that I learned about my part of Queens so far is its respect for analog photography. The fact that I can have just a little conversation of technical things with most of the people here makes things a whole lot easier for me.
The portraits you see above is what I have so far, made mostly with a 4×5 camera and some in 35mm. I plan to show the landscapes of Saint Albans soon..and hope to make more portraits as well.
I’ve had this concept in mind for about a week and finally got the time to photograph it. In the beginning of the shoot, without realizing for 30 minutes, I was trying to do too much with my lighting. I started out with two 2×3″ soft boxes on broncolor unilites and it wasn’t coming out the way I sought out for it to be. After sitting on it for a while, I simplified things for myself and used one bare unitlite and I was all smiles after that.
*To whoever left this old pepsi can in the storage room at the photolab, thanks for the assist.*
Lately all I’ve wanted to do is improve my eye in portraiture, I’d like to thank these four people with the assist.

Photographed this same factory around the end of last year. After a while I wasn’t happy with it and photographed it again with a 4×5 camera.
4×5 Film>Digital
Here’s two more photographs from the day.
Back when I was in my view camera class, I mentioned that I got the chance to use my professor’s 8×10 field camera. Since then I never got around to scanning it. Today I had some free time until the 2012 NBA all-star game started so I took that time to scan. I shot two sheets of film but, this is the one I ended up liking more.
Portraiture was always something I wanted to improve in, and I feel that taking this class is helping a lot. It’s also helped me detect where lighting is coming from in a photograph and how to be creative with light. Anywho, Here are some of my portraits from studio lighting 1.
For my studio lighting 1 class, we had an assignment on food photography. A friend and I wanted to stay away from the usual photographs of apples, oranges and muffins. I decided to photograph fish. After some thought of how I was going to make this photograph, I decided that it would be great to stuff the fish with Swedish Fish.
In addition, I would like to apologize to co-workers and students of the photo lab for stinking up the studio…and taking up space in the fridge.
Day 2 of the food photography assignment in my studio lighting class, I had another fish to photograph. But for this fish I was a little unprepared, I didn’t have a hook or any string. My Professor was kind enough to lend me a big hook and some thin white string saved the day. In the beginning of the shoot, I took some shots of the fish head hanging normally off the hook and string. After that, it was time to destroy. I took an exacto knife and gouged the eye until the goo started spilling out. To top it all off I put a gummy worm in it’s mouth.
A big shout out too my mom for supplying the two fish heads, some Swedish fish and gummy worms.
But damn, what a waste of candy…
Three weeks ago I started the winter session at LaGuardia CC and it’s kept me very busy. Taking chemistry 101 and studio lighting 1 in a 6 week session is no joke. I’ve never got the chance to upload what I photographed in 35mm on the 1st of the month, so here it is.
Enjoy and have a great day.
It’s a new year, a year to work harder than the last.
To start the first day of the year on a good note, I went out for a photo walk. Since me and my family moved back to Queens, I’ve had my eye on this red car because of memories. Before I moved to the Bronx, 7 years ago, this car was still in the same spot. I don’t think it’s been moved since. I remember passing it on the bus on my way to school and just wondering when it was going to disappear. 7 years ago the car was in tip-top shape. 7 years later the glass is dirty, broken and a question mark in the front. To top it off, it’s got flat tires and rust on the side.
I feel like I’ve moved back to Queens at the right time to see the interesting changes of this car. I’ll be going back to photograph it a couple more times in the future.
